HERstory– “Jeritan” (2009 / 73’)
Dir: Cecilia Ho
Production Company: Macao Live Net Association
In Cantonese, English & Indonesian Bahasa with Chinese & English subtitles
This is a story of Indonesian female migrant workers who left their homes to work as domestic helpers in Macao, a community that is mainly Chinese, and a city of casinos and entertainment. The life of female migrant workers has rarely been documented. This film depicts their life in Macao – where they are mostly confined to the homes of their employers – as they strive through song and dance to share their emotions with female compatriots at Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro (San Ma Lo). For many migrant workers, separated from their husbands and children for years on end, going home turns out to be not only a story of reunion but also of longing. Feeling adrift, they speak up about sisterhood, homesickness and hopefulness. All of this is part of HERstory. While depicting the stories of the Indonesian migrant workers, this documentary also seeks to highlight their contribution to Macao.
Zhean and Leon (2013 / 40’)
Dir: Nuno Viegas
In Bahasa Indonesia with Chinese & English subtitle
In Singapore and Hong Kong, thousands of Indonesian women work as maids, having to live with their employers. Far away from home, friends and family, the absence of men in these communities changes their perception on gender and sexuality. For Zhean and Leon, Macao represents a place where there is a real possibility of living together and the chance of building a true relationship.
